Thanks to the Masters!
In my first book, The Beat of a Different Drummer, I included a dedication page with a thanks to the Masters. It was my little tribute to some of the legendary drummers who marched before us and influenced or inspired me at some point in my life. Here is that list of names:
Thomas Cecil Andrews, Frank Arsenault, Nick Attanasio, Dr. Berger, Dave Boddie,
Bruce and Emmett, Paul Cormier, Bobby Culkin, Jeff Funell, Harold Green, Ed Lemley,
Ken Lemley, Mitch Markowich, Gus Moeller, J. Burns Moore, Joe Morello, Les Parks,
Charley Poole Jr., Jack Pratt, Hugh Quigley, Bob Redican, George Lawrence Stone,
Earl Strutze, Al "Duke" Terreri, Bobby Thompson and Bill Westhall.
And what always happens when you make a list? You always leave someone off...or in this case, you leave many someones off!
I am now going to take the opportunity to recognize some of the drummers who I left off the list.
George Carroll, Jim Clark, Ed Classey, Dennis Delucia, Dan English,
Alphonse Grieder, Marty Hurley, Jim Kilpatrick, Al Merritt, Dan Mullen,
Eric Perrilloux, Sammy Romie, Bill Rotella, Ed Shank and Charley Wilcoxon.
Even with these additional names I'm sure there are drummers I am forgetting, so from time to time I will add.
As a tribute to these legendary figures I am going to start putting a little story of how they affected me in my musical journey. Whether it is through their teaching, writing or performance I will try to express my appreciation of their influence on the world of drumming.
